Sleep apnea

When people are asleep and their breathing stops for even a few seconds, they have sleep apnea. Doctors may define sleep apnea when people stop breathing at least twenty times for at least ten seconds.

When the muscles in the mouth relax, breathing stops. The tongue or other soft tissue may then shut off the trachea in the mouth. Another cause is when the brains does not signal the body to breathe.

Symptoms and treatment

People with sleep apnea often wake up and don’t experience a deep, restful sleep. By day, they often are drowsy and have headaches, poor concentration, behavioral changes or depression. Sometimes people with sleep apnea also have other chronic conditions. We create specialised treatment plans tailored to help patients breathe better during sleep and reduce these daytime symptoms.
